NextiraOne, Smart City and Nortel Networks Revive the Dallas Convention Center's Critical Communications Network Following Serious Flooding Damage

Disaster Recovery Process Tested by Network Washout

Houston, TX - October 22, 2002 - NextiraOne, a Platinum Equity company and leading network solutions and services provider of voice, data and converged technology, Smart City, America's leading provider of event technology services, and Nortel Networks* recently executed a successful disaster recovery response for the Dallas Convention Center after two broken water mains seriously damaged the center's PBX phone network. Just two days after massive flooding destroyed key components of the convention center's network, which serves the administration and events of the facility, all 150 employees at the facility were back to work and thousands of delegates arrived for the national meeting of a major U.S. corporation.

"NextiraOne, Smart City and Nortel Networks took quick action and utilized a well-tested disaster recovery process to restore telecommunications services at the Dallas Convention Center," said Rick Snyder, senior vice president, professional services for NextiraOne. "By having a clear and actionable procedure in place, we were able to diagnose the exact network damage, order a complex communications system and install it with speed and precision in a matter of hours."

The convention center's PBX system, managed under contract by Smart City, is built with Nortel Networks equipment, including the Nortel Networks Option 61C and Meridian* Mail*. After the flooding was reported, it was determined a complete replacement of all the major switch components would be required.

"The ability to locate and manage inventory quickly and efficiently is a critical part of our disaster recovery assistance process," said Steve Schilling, president, Enterprise Accounts, Nortel Networks. "Within two days of receiving the initial phone call, we located and distributed new equipment to the center for installation."

The Smart City team, along with support from NextiraOne, worked around the clock installing the new equipment.

"Diagnosing the extent of the damage was our initial challenge, given that pipes had burst on two separate occasions and flooded the basement each time," said Ron Patterson of Smart City Networks. "Once the new gear was on site, the flawless teamwork between all the companies was the real key to getting services restored to the convention center quickly and efficiently."

"NextiraOne, Smart City and Nortel Networks worked rapidly and efficiently to bring the Dallas Convention Center back from a potentially devastating situation," said Gloria Lopez Carter from the Dallas Convention Center. "Their ability to rally resources and expertise meant no delay in business - and that was a critical win for us all and our good customers."

The Dallas Convention Center, with the completion of its latest expansion, will be one of the largest in the country with over one million square feet of exhibition space. Each year, the facilities host approximately 190 events, and in 2001 more than 1,650,000 visited the center's numerous shows and attractions. According to Lopez Carter, the convention center hosting of any convention would have been extremely difficult without the facility's communications systems. Because the network was restored quickly, the event was able to occur without any delay or interference.
